Although the advice on this page about getting the right YouTube tags for optimal exposure on both YouTube and Google certainly makes sense, my experience is that how popular a video is is completely random. I have seen videos with no description and a crappy title get all kinds of traffic and the most optimized video getting none. Big puzzle to me.

Yes Steve, to a certain extent, there does seem to be an element of random luck when it comes to YouTube videos. All you can do is provide the best content and let the viewers of your videos be responsible for recommending your video to others instead of waiting on YouTube or Google. Also YouTube does not want any video doing TOO well because you won't need to purchase their advertising to drive traffic to your videos ;)
